Wheatgrass, a cure for cancer?

There’s a special kind of grass that’s getting rave reviews for its health benefits, some people are convinced it might be just what the doctor should order to clobber cancer cells.

This health wonder is wheatgrass—arguably one of the most nutrient-dense, green superfoods on the planet. The word “superfood” describes foods with high concentrations of nutrients such as amino acids, enzymes and other compounds to protect and repair damage to your cells.

This nutrient-dense food definitely fits the bill—considering it contains at least 13 vitamins and all 20 amino acids including the “essential” amino acids — those your body can’t make for itself. Your body needs these nutrients to boost its immunity against disease such as cancer.

Wheatgrass packs such a whopping load of nutrients that a research scientist named Dr. Charles F. Schnabel said 15 pounds of wheatgrass is the equivalent of 350 pounds of carrots, lettuce, celery and other fresh vegetables! Dr. Schnabel was an agricultural chemist who is credited with starting the movement to make grasses available for human consumption. He touted the nutritional value of barley and rye grass shoots as well as those of wheat. In the early 1940s you could buy tins of his dry grass powder in drug stores all over the country. Cancer wasn’t the health crisis back then it is today!

His research led him to believe that the nutritional value of grasses varied at different stages of the plant’s life, and he identified the point when wheatgrass should be harvested for a maximum wealth of nutrients that naturally contain anti cancer properties. If you’re wondering, that’s BEFORE it develops a flower or seedhead. And while we’re on the subject, there’s no gluten in wheatgrass. The gluten is only present in the seed, which is what flour is made from. If you have an allergy to wheat flour products it’s unlikely you’ll have a problem with wheatgrass.

Get ready for a little “green magic” in the battle against cancer!

Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in almost all plants and algae. This detoxifier provides the perfect alkaline balance for many of the acidic foods common to the American diet. Cancer can’t live in an alkaline enviroment.

Research shows chlorophyll also helps:

  • Correct blood sugar problems

It’s easy to see why H.E. Exactly how it works is still Nature’s secret; but to the layman, at least, the phenomenon seems like green magic.”

Wheatgrass is a good source of living chlorophyll. And a few studies show wheatgrass may play an important role in cancer cure and prevention.

So has wheatgrass helped any cancer patients?

Scientific studies show that it has. In 1980, Dr. Chiu Nan Lai of the University of Texas System Cancer Center showed extracts of wheatgrass effectively restrained several carcinogens. If true, this means wheatgrass is at least useful for preventing cancer if not curing it.

In fact, research showed that applying just low levels of wheatgrass extract to the cancer-causing agents diminished their activity by up to 99%. But that’s not all. Another study showed chlorophyll could be an effective antidote for poisonous radiation treatments which can cause cancer.

A United States Army experiment exposed guinea pigs to lethal doses of radiation. Researchers found the guinea pigs that ate chlorophyll-rich cabbage and broccoli had half the mortality rate of those fed a non-chlorophyll diet. Cabbage and broccoli contain a lot of other nutrients besides chlorophyll, so this study is not the last word on the benefits of chlorophyll.

Some scientists think chlorophyll possesses a particular kind of magic when it comes to health benefits. These folks say it’s so rich in oxygen it’s virtually like hemoglobin ( the oxygen-carrying component of red blood cells.) This is a controversial idea. But in a moment I’ll tell you about a study that supports it.

Wheatgrass advocates say it helps oxygenate your brain—and potentially EVERY cell in your body. Cancer can’t live in an oxygen rich enviroment.

You can look at wheatgrass advocates as a particular sect in the church of chlorophyll. They believe this plant is practically a magic elixir. And it’s a fact that some cancer patients who use wheatgrass do recover. Most of the time they make use of a number of therapies. They don’t rely exclusively on wheatgrass. It’s an important piece of an integrative cancer treatment.

I’m sold on the benefits of so-called “green foods”. I take spirulina myself, and chlorella is another excellent choice. Like wheatgrass, these two substances contain all 8 essential amino acids, chlorophyll, and other nutrients. All green foods contribute greatly in the fight against cancer.

I believe it’s a good idea for any of us, healthy or sick, to take some kind of green supplement. Wheatgrass is an excellent choice, although it doesn’t seem to be supported by as much research as spirulina and chlorella and their noted benefits in fighting cancer.

Dr. Ann Wigmore, ND, nutritionist and founder of the Hippocrates Health Institute in Boston, credits wheatgrass with curing her gangrenous leg and preventing its amputation!

And a study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology supports the use of wheat grass juice to improve outcomes for cancer patients. Researchers examined the effects of wheatgrass juice on 400 terminally ill cancer patients at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Cancer Research Institute in India.

Researchers wanted to know if the plant juice could help improve hemoglobin level, serum protein and performance status in the patients. The results?

Fifty patients required transfusion support and were excluded from the study. But 348 of the remaining patients experienced significant improvement in total protein & albumin levels.

Among these 348 patients, both white blood cell and platelet counts remained the same before and after the six-month study during which they were given wheatgrass juice. However, their overall health performance status jumped from 50 percent to 70 percent.

The researchers concluded that wheatgrass juice is an effective alternative to blood transfusion. That’s quite a claim. I’d have to say more study is needed, especially considering blood counts remained unchanged. But these researchers believe medical professionals should be encouraged to use this treatment for other terminally ill cancer patients.

If you want to experience the health benefits of wheatgrass, you can find it in many health food stores as fresh produce, juice, powder concentrate or in tablets. Some health food stores will “juice” a cup of fresh wheatgrass for you while you wait, WholeFoods is one example.  Some folks grow it at home and make the juice themselves.

So can you cure cancer by eating grass? Maybe. . .as part of an overall integrated program of other proven safe therapies that boost the immune system and allow it to do what it’s naturally intended to do, kill cancer!

    I was surprised to read the title because if curing cancer can be that easy then why still people are dying because of cancer? Even before this there is a lot of food that were reported as anti cancer food and people are advised to take them to prevent cancer. I was wondering how effective they really are. However, there’s no harm for us to eat them, so why not. I hope you’ll write about them too.

      People are still dying of cancer because the FDA and the Pharma industry are making too much money and wield too much power! Our system in this country is backwards. If someone feels ill, they are given a prescription. If someone has cancer their bodies are destroyed through radiation and chemotherapy treatments. When in reality, it’s the alternative cancer treatments that are saving people’s lives. The treatments use immune system supporting therapies that heal the body at the root cause, not mask a symptom. Eat whole foods, real organic produce, veggies, legumes and nuts and consume epigenetic foods like HAVVN produces!

    Sometimes, it’s in genetic even how healthily you try to live in, you still tend to get it from your gene or maybe you’re bad surrounding. Even if you don’t smoke but the people around you do, you’ll have higher chances to get cancer. Sometimes, there are foods that can help your chances to get them lower. So, you can try to eat them. However, the food is only act as an anti cancer not a total cure. So you still got to be careful with your health.

      That’s very true, however, there are so many things we can control that really we reduce our risk for disease and the science of Epigenetics is proving this every day! By eating nutrigenomic or epigenetic nutrition daily, by exercising 3-4 times a week by reducing the toxins in your home and by being more spiritual will go along way in extending your life and preventing disease!

    If people can really cure cancer by eating grass, that would be great news for all of the cancer patient in the world. Cancer is a very expensive sickness. If grass can really helps them then that is a real blessing from God.

    I heard about wheatgrass before. Then the market started to sell wheatgrass drink. The drink got really popular at that time. However, when I gave it a try, the drink tasted so sweet. I guess they put too much sugar in it. Isn’t it cancer feed on the sugar and fat?

      Yes Tina, cancer feeds on two things, SUGAR and MUCOUS! Stay away from drinks and foods high in sugar or with sugar added. Even real sugar should be consumed in moderation just like anything else! Also, stay away from milk as it’s the foundation for mucous in your body and cancer feeds on mucous!
