For centuries food additives have been used in our foods to make it taste, look better and have a longer shelf life.   Ever wondered why food products have such a long shelf life? While food additives add no nutritional value to our food, they are used in the manufacturing, processing and storage process. With more and more people eating processed foods, the supply justifies the demand, however have you ever considered how many toxic ingredients are infused into the food you eat?

 

Let’s Look At The Toxic Ingredients in Your Breakfast Cereal

How many of us have cereal for breakfast? It’s supposed to be healthy, fast, easy and convenient but let’s take a closer look at one very popular brand. This particular cereal contains BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene), HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) and Yellow #5. So what are these three toxic ingredients and how are they harmful?

  • BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) is a common preservative used in cereals, chewing gum, potato chips, and vegetable oils. It is used to prevent foods changing color, flavor and becoming rancid. BHT has the potential to cause cancer. It alters a person’s behavior and has an effect on the neurological system.
  • HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) is a highly refined artificial sweetener found in unassuming things like pizza sauce and salad dressing. HFCS causes diabetes, mood disorders and obesity.
  • Yellow #5 is a colorant. As most food colorants are derived from coal-tar, which contains lead and arsenic, they are cancer causing agents.

How About Some Toxic Ingredients For Lunch?

The next time you buy hotdogs, bacon, ham, luncheon meat, cured meats, corned beef, smoked fish or any other type of processed meat, look at the label. Our fast paced, hectic lifestyles mean that we often eat on the run. You could be buying more than just lunch when you buy a hotdog! These foods are made up of processed meat that contains Sodium Nitrate. What is Sodium Nitrate?
Sodium Nitrate is a preservative. It is also used in coloring and flavoring of most processed foods. Sodium Nitrate might sound harmless but consider the fact that it is highly carcinogenic when introduced into the digestive system. It can wreak havoc with your liver and pancreas. Sodium Nitrate is widely regarded as a toxic ingredient. In the 1970’s the USDA tried to ban it but food manufacturers complained that there was no alternative to preserve packaged meat products.

Your Kids And Toxic Ingredients

How often do you and your kids eat a packet of crisps and drink a soda? Acrylamides are cancer causing chemicals and toxic ingredients that form when foods with carbohydrates are exposed to high heat due to baking, frying and grilling. This ingredient is found in everything from bread crusts to crisps and they are not listed on the packaging because they are not intentional ingredients.
Sodas contain Phosphoric Acid which is an acid used to give the soda it’s fizz and dissolve the carbon dioxide. Phosphoric acid has the ability to dissolve steel and stone masons use it for etching rocks! Consider what it will do tooth enamel…
