What is Epigenetics?
So, exactly what is Epigenetics, well, it’s changing health paradigms and offering some of the most compelling solutions to extending our life span and at the same time reducing our years of disability!
Epigenetic scientists are uncovering the major causes of aging and providing viable solutions in regards to our genetics.
As scientists unlock the combination of our genetic code, they are finding the most revolutionary solutions for human health and it’s just beginning! Were you aware that although the average age of life in the U.S. is now 78 years of age, it’s coming at the expense of more and more health related problems and diseases. Additionally and even more alarming is the fact that our years of disability have now increased to 7.5 years. What does that mean? It means that on average you will spend the last 7.5 years of our life in a nursing home. That’s certainly not the way I want to go out, how about you? Well, you don’t have to and the science of epigenetics is showing us how.
The DNA you were born with is in fact not your destiny! Time magazine featured epigenetics on the cover of their January 2010 issue and again in July 2011 and explains very well “What is Epigenetics”!
An Epigenetics definition by scientists says that 30% of our DNA or “Genome” is pre-programmed and can’t be changed as opposed to the 100% scientists used to believe prior to the 2002 mapping of the human genome. The amazing and life changing discovery is that 70% of our epigenome (“epi” meaning above) or the layer above our DNA is controllable and influenced by the following four factors; Environment, Nutrition, Exercise and your Spiritual & Social relationships.
Scientists are learning through the discoveries of epigenetics and gene expression, how to jump start good genes that extend life and silence bad genes which prevents disease and slows down the aging process. DNA sequencing can be used in medicine to identify, diagnose and potentially develop treatments for genetic diseases.

Epigenetics is the study of heritable changes in gene expression or cellular phenotype caused by mechanisms other than changes in the underlying DNA sequence.
It refers to functionally revelant modifications to the genome that do not involve a change in the nucleotide sequence.
DNA Methylation and histone modification, both of which serve to regulate gene expression without altering the underlying dna sequence.
- These changes may remain through cell divisions for the remainder of the cell’s life and may also last for multiple generations.
So, when absorbing all this scientific information that answers the question of what is epigenetics, it boils down to this, proper nutrition, daily exercise and having a positive mindset around like-minded people.
